1. Why landing on Mars is hard

Because Mars has just enough air to bake and shove your spacecraft around, but not enough air to slow it down safely by parachute.

2. The “7 minutes of terror” in 3–4 steps

1. Fiery slam into the atmosphere
   The capsule hits the top of Mars’ atmosphere at around 20,000 km/h, the heat shield turns white‑hot, and the whole thing is basically a controlled.

2. Parachute yanks it back
   A giant parachute explodes open while the vehicle is still going faster than a jet, violently yanking it slower but not nearly slow enough to land.

3. Shell pops, rover looks for a parking spot

4. Biggest engineering headaches (no jargon)

• The “Goldilocks from hell” atmosphere
  Mars’ air is roughly 1% as thick as Earth’s, so it’s too thin for parachutes to do the whole job, but thick enough to create brutal heating and buffeting during entry.

• Going from bullet speed to bicycle speed in minutes
  The spacecraft must drop from ~20,000 km/h to about walking pace in about seven minutes, and every step has to work perfectly the first time.

• Hitting a tiny safe patch on a whole planet
  The landing system needs to hit a “parking spot” only a few kilometers across on a world that’s tens of millions of kilometers away, dodging rocks, cliffs and craters on the fly.

5. One dramatic failed landing

In 2016, Europe’s Schiaparelli lander tried to touch down on Mars as a test mission. Everything looked good until its computer briefly thought it was below ground level, cut the parachute and shut the rockets off too early, and the lander free‑fell and slammed into Mars at high speed, leaving a dark scar seen from orbit.

Since beginning operations in 2022, Webb has uncovered discoveries so unexpected that they're forcing scientists to rewrite textbooks and question everything we thought we knew about the universe.

Ancient Galaxies That Shouldn't Exist
